The Madrid Codex, also known as the Codex Tro-Cortesianus, is one of the few surviving pre-Columbian Maya manuscripts. Thought to have been created in the Postclassic period (circa 1200–1500 CE), it is an essential resource for understanding Maya civilization. The manuscript consists of 112 pages folded accordion-style, filled with hieroglyphic text and vibrant illustrations depicting deities, rituals, calendars, and everyday activities.Rediscovered in Spain in the 19th century, the codex is believed to have been brought to Europe during the Spanish conquest. Its content focuses on divination and rituals, reflecting the Maya's deep connection to astronomy, agriculture, and religion. Written on bark paper coated with lime plaster, the Madrid Codex is a masterpiece of Maya artistry and scholarship. It is currently housed in the Museo de América in Madrid, where it remains a vital artifact for studying the ancient Maya world. Read more
