The Chicago & Alton Railroad, a trailblazer in luxury passenger transport, christened its premier Chicago-St. Louis run as the Alton Limited, colloquially known as the 'red train' due to its distinctive livery. In 1924, the C & A revamped the Alton Limited, introducing a swift Pacific-type locomotive hauling brand new Pullman heavyweight cars, all in harmonious maroon and red hues. Upon its debut at Chicago's then-under-construction Union Station, the 'new' Alton Limited earned the moniker 'Handsomest Train in the World.'
